Ehlers Estate in St Helena is a paragon of diversity, and it’s transparent in the remarkable complexity that’s a hallmark of their wines. The 42-acre estate vineyard is a mosaic of five primary vineyard blocks, separated by soil type, and 25 sub-blocks, defined by clones and rootstocks. This environment provides the winemaking team an expansive selection of fruit characteristics, including structure, acidity, front, mid and back palate, to work within their blending. Their 2017 Merlot is an absolute classic and a stunning value to boot.

Ehlers’ winemaker is Laura Diaz Munoz. She began her career in Spain, New Zealand, and Chile before coming to Napa Valley, where she was the Associate Winemaker for Cardinale, Lokoya, Mt Brave, and La Jota.

The Vineyard is in the narrowest part of Napa Valley, nestled between the Mayacamas and the Vaca Mountains. This funnel creates a unique micro-climate with constant airflow, allowing the grapes to maintain acid and structure. If you love Merlot, you’ll be doing yourself a favor by securing a case of this.

Description

2017 EHLERS ESTATE ST. HELENA MERLOT

“The 2017 Ehlers Estate Merlot is a beautifully balanced wine. A blend of 3 different clones, it’s a superb expression of the varietal, which I love to highlight. The wine has a red garnet color with deep layers. Aromas of raspberries, red currant, and candied cherries evolve into vanilla, licorice, and notes of smashed rocks. The oak notes accentuate the red fruit which makes it fragrant and interesting. This wine is medium to full-bodied, with bright acidity and firm tannins. The finish is long and full of candied cherries. Enjoyable now, but lovely in 10-15 years.”
