There’s a renewed focus on quality Merlots being produced in California, which is proven by a dramatic increase in customer requests for them as well as the number of emptied Merlot bottles in the tasting room.  I believe that many of the best Merlots produced in Napa Valley come from the area in and around Calistoga, which is distinguished by volcanic soils and the largest diurnal temperature variation in Napa Valley.  Daytime highs and night time lows span up to 50 degrees Fahrenheit, and while the hot daytime temperatures allow the grapes to develop deep and compelling flavors, the cool nights help to maintain acidity and structure.  With all of the contributing factors working in unison, this area has proven that it can produce some of the best Merlot in California… Just look at last year’s #1 wine in the Wine Spectator.

Composed by Mia Klein, who has a long history of making wines for Dalla Valle, Spottswoode, Araujo, Viader, and Chappellet, as well as being named Winemaker of the Year by Food & Wine Magazine.  The 2014 is profoundly hedonistic with penetrating dark berries, pipe tobacco with supple layers and milk chocolate.  Sculpted from the historic Frediani Vineyard which was planted in 1905, this 100% Merlot is absolutely one of the best examples of domestic Merlots anywhere near this price point.

Winery Notes: “Violets, raspberry jam, dark plum, fresh blackberry and blackberry leaf; molasses and caramel, fresh tobacco and sandalwood. In the mouth the flavors have very good impact, intensity, and length; the texture has some chewy density to carry the flavors from initial impact through the finish.
