Can a single wine change the way the world views a particular grape varietal?  I would argue that Paloma had consumers re-evaluating New World Merlot when their 2001 vintage ranked #1 on the Wine Spectator Top 100 list back in 2003.  After all, this was the first Domestic Merlot to clinch the coveted Wine Spectator #1 spot. The newly released 2014 gives you one of those light-bulb-moments for how great Merlot can be from Spring Mountain…  One of the wine’s hallmarks traits is the exceptional aromatics, often showing vivid plum, black cherries, melted chocolate, savory herbs and roasted espresso.  This is the epitome of Mountain grown Merlot…

Emerging from one of Napa Valley’s best vintages, one that the Wine Spectator describes as producing “dense, charming, cellar-worthy wines,” the 2014 is 100% Merlot and bears a dense core of intense dark fruits, beautifully intertwined with Chinese black tea, muddled blackberries, eucalyptus, bay leaves, and subtle spice box.  This wine is absolutely irresistible right now and opens up beautifully in glass, revealing new and interesting components with each swirl of the glass.  There’s never enough of this wine to satisfy demand, so don’t wait too long to get yours.

Winery Notes: “The 2014 exhibits deep ruby color, with a bright, sweet, multi-layered nose of raspberries, currants, red plum and background notes of coffee and anise. This youthful wine benefits from aeration, revealing a lush mouthfeel and beautiful ripeness of fruit on the mid-palate. The wine has a solid backbone, true to its Spring Mountain origins, complemented by long, sweet tannins and a velvety finish. Truly an age-worthy wine, this Merlot would pair beautifully with rack of lamb, or boeuf bourguignon. Enjoy!”
