2017 DOMAINE CHRISTELLE BETTON CROZES-HERMITAGE CAPRICE
$36.00 $36.00
Hermitage is the titan of the Northern Rhone, and nearby Crozes-Hermitage surrounds Hermitage to its Eastern and Southern sides and shares some similarities in terroir. The iconic regions also hold homogeneous grape requirements that, like Hermitage, are based around a core of Syrah. A stunning example of classic Crozes-Hermitage comes from Domaine Christelle Betton, and at $36, this 94 Point Red made a big impression on our tasting panel.
Christelle Betton’s top and most limited Cuvée Caprice could be the poster child for classic Crozes-Hermitage. The wine has an exquisite perfume of blue violets and smokey minerals, and on the palate, it’s deep, rich, and powerful with pressed dark berries, fresh charcuterie, dried flowers, cocoa and hints of pepper.
The 2017 checks in at 100% Syrah and arose from the Estate’s oldest vines ranging 30-40 years, which produce the fruit of captivating and hedonistic qualities. At $36, you might go all-in.

2017 DOMAINE CHRISTELLE BETTON CROZES-HERMITAGE CAPRICE
"....from the estate's oldest syrah vines, planted 30 to 40 years ago in the stony soils of La Roche de Glun. Vinified without added yeasts and aged in used barrels for a year, it's enticingly floral and spicy, with cool restraint to its plummy fruit-think cold plum at peak ripeness, eaten outside on a warm summer day." 94 Points
"A suave, highly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe dark berries, cherry preserves, incense and exotic spices, with succulent herb and olive notes in the background. Concentrated but lively as well, offering sharply defined blackberry, bitter cherry, candied violet and exotic spice flavors and a late jolt of spicy cracked pepper. Clings with strong authority on the penetrating, floral-driven finish, which is framed by slowly mounting tannins." 93 Points
![]() | "Hints of violets and mint perfume the nose of the 2017 Crozes Hermitage Caprice, a selection of the estate's oldest vines. Aged in older barrels, this full-bodied, creamy-textured wine is a beauty, loaded with blueberries and floral notes and finishing silky and long. It should drink well for at least 4-5 years." 92 Points |
![]() | "Meaty, perfumed, silky, grainy - really lovely Crozes which combines dark, brooding, savoury notes with excellent structural balance. It's light enough to drink freely, yet complex enough to be really engaging. Top drop! (RH)" 17/20 |
