In Barolo, having connections to Cru vineyards is an excellent thing. Renzo Seghesio is the former mayor of Monforte, and since 1900 his family has owned Cascina Pajana, a small division of the Ginestra Cru Vineyard. Ginestra is one of Barolo’s top Crus, and wines from it can fetch well over $100 per bottle and garner high 90s scores. Renzo’s 2014 Barolo contains 60% Ginestra and Pajana fruit, layered with 40% grapes from La Morra, and at $40, the quality is unmatched.
After graduating from the University of Turin, Renzo returned to Piedmont in the 1960s to craft wine from his family’s parcels. He also purchased a small plot in La Morra, which adds freshness and earlier approachability than the single-vineyard Ginestra or Pajana bottlings, which sell for around double.
Ginestra Vineyard sits on calcareous-clay and yellowish sandstone soils, and the vines yield powerful Nebbiolo fruit. Renzo’s plot in La Morra is farmed and vinified identically to Ginestra and Pajana, and at $40, don’t miss out.
