2013 BIBI GRAETZ “TESTAMATTA” TOSCANA, IGT

In winemaking, techniques and methods can be taught in school and perfected over time, but in some cases, growing up in the vineyard and being immersed in wine at a young age, can develop into something great.  Combine that with a natural gift for arts and winemaking, and you have the recipe for something extraordinary.  Winemaker Bibi Graetz literally grew up in the vineyard, in a town outside of Florence, his father was a skilled sculptor and Bibi’s talent lies in crafting some of the best expressions of Sangiovese that I’ve ever tasted.  A true feat, if you consider the price of some other top giants of Super Tuscan world.  Earning a stellar 97 point score from James Suckling, the longtime European Bureau Chief for the Wine Spectator, this remarkable wine at $30/btl below retail certainly won’t last.

Hatched from ancient Sangiovese vines dating back to the 1930’s, and polished for 18 months in oak, the 2013 Testamatta escapes from the glass with floral infused red and blue fruits, dried cassis, baking spices and subtle tobacco notes.   The flavors have flawless execution and develop harmoniously in the glass, this wine is absolutely gorgeous now and has the structure to last 20 years…
