2011 NIEPOORT “LBV” PORT, DOURO, PORTUGAL
You may have heard that 2011 was one of Portugal’s most prolific, and profound vintages for their Port wines. In fact, the Wine Spectator called it a “Benchmark Vintage” and with a vintage rating of 99 Points, 2011 tied 1994 and 1948, for the highest rating since 1927…
LBV, a wine term meaning Late-Bottled Vintage, isn’t bottled until up to four to six years from the vintage date. This means they spend about twice as long in oak as vintage Ports, so they’re often much more accessible at an early age. At around ¼ the cost of Niepoort’s Vintage Port from 2011, their 2011 LBV represents an incredible value at $24.99 per 750ml btl. Sourced from 70 year old vines in Portugal’s famed Douro region, Niepoort’s LBV is a glass staining, deep purple/black in color with intensely woven arromas that flow from the glass, and flavors of exceptional depth and purity.
