$39.99 $39.99

This stunning, triple 92 point Ribera del Duero was created from over 90-year-old vines, grown in sandy, clay soils that have been farmed by the Calvo and Casajús families for generations. It’s 100% Tempranillo, Spain’s signature grape, and venerated for producing robust reds with immense depth and structure. In general, you shouldn’t consume them young, so when I find one from a top producer that has been perfectly aged, I pay close attention.

Casajus Antiguos Vinedos was carved from dry-farmed vines planted in the 1920s in Quintana del Pidio, which is a small village in the heart of Ribera del Duero. The ancient vines produce powerful berries with intense black cherry, violets, and earthly spices.

In the cellar, the wine spends 18 months in a combination of French and American oak barrels, which helps integrate the fruit, tannins, and acids, and add interesting spice and vanilla characteristics. If you love big, full-bodied red wines that offer immense bang-for-your-buck, this is for you.

“…The fruit is ripe, but mixes notes of red and black berries, which are well-integrated with sweet spices and smoke aromas from the barrel. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with plenty of smoky flavors and abundant, fine-grained, slightly dusty tannins that call for more time in the bottle, ending slightly warm…”
