2007 MARQUES de MURRIETA CASTILLO YGAY GRAN RESERVA ESPECIAL RIOJA
There are few connections closer to the heart of Rioja than Marqués de Murrieta, whose founder, Luciano Murrieta, was one of the first winemakers to establish a winery in Rioja in the mid 19th century after studying winemaking in Bordeaux. His legacy lives on today in the perennially high-scoring Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial Rioja, with the 2007 vintage scoring 98 points by James Suckling and the 2010 release clinching the #1 spot on the Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list last year.
Gran Reserva is the most prolonged aging classification in Rioja, requiring a minimum of two years in barrel followed by three years in bottle before release. Castillo Ygay’s 2007 vintage has seen an additional eight and a half years of bottle development, transforming the wine into pure hedonism with incredibly soft and supple tannins, luscious flavors, and an ethereal finish.
