There are few connections closer to the heart of Rioja than Marqués de Murrieta, whose founder, Luciano Murrieta, was one of the first winemakers to establish a winery in Rioja in the mid 19th century after studying winemaking in Bordeaux. His legacy lives on today in the perennially high-scoring Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial Rioja, with the 2007 vintage scoring 98 points by James Suckling and the 2010 release clinching the #1 spot on the Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list last year.

Gran Reserva is the most prolonged aging classification in Rioja, requiring a minimum of two years in barrel followed by three years in bottle before release. Castillo Ygay’s 2007 vintage has seen an additional eight and a half years of bottle development, transforming the wine into pure hedonism with incredibly soft and supple tannins, luscious flavors, and an ethereal finish.

2007 MARQUES de MURRIETA CASTILLO YGAY GRAN RESERVA ESPECIAL RIOJA

“The aromas of this show an amazing freshness of flowers and herbs such as lavender, rosemary, and violet. Then it goes to raspberry, candy and currants. Black licorice too. A truly great wine on the nose. Full-bodied, racy and linear. So polished. It’s like a red ruby. 86% tempranillo and 14% mazuelo in the blend….Great length and future….”

“…This is still a baby, long and with depth and tannins that should melt in a couple of years. Compared with the 2005 it is fresher, perhaps not as concentrated, but for me the extra freshness compensates and puts it at a very similar quality level…”

“Beguiling nose: lifted, with kirsch and floral notes, real garrigue scents of lavender and wild herbs. In the mouth the fruit is more solid; cherry, but also a plummy rasp of bittersweetness, with liquorice notes. The tannins are fine but dense and chewy…”
