2017 MORGAN SANTA LUCIA HIGHLANDS CHARDONNAY

One of the most blatantly obvious signs that we’ve come across a wine that’s truly special, is when the first taste cuts right through dozens of wines that we tasted before it.  We found Morgan’s 2017 SLH Chardonnay dead in the center of a grueling Cabernet tasting, and immediately upon entry, the wine’s laser precision, perfectly balanced fruit, and fresh, lively acidity provided a much needed palate reset.  We weren’t at all surprised when we learned that this sub thirty-dollar Chardonnay had already earned multiple 93-95 point scores…

Morgan’s 2017 Santa Lucia Highlands Chardonnay is a Cuvée style Chardonnay that was built around a core of 50% fruit from the winery’s organically farmed Double L Vineyard, and is balanced with neighboring vineyards, including Tondre and McIntyre.  The winery makes a single-vineyard Chardonnays from all three of those sites, which retail for around double the price of their Santa Lucia Highlands bottling.

The best Chardonnays are grown in cooler climates where the lower temperatures help maintain crisp acidity and produce more focused wines.  One of the greatest climatic examples is the Santa Lucia Highlands in Monterey County, where the cool maritime air gives the grapes what they need to reach their highest potential.
