2016 PAUL HOBBS “CROSSBARN” CHARDONNAY
Great wine doesn’t always have to be expensive… Paul Hobbs’ 2016 Crossbarn Chardonnay is an explicit reminder of that, leaping from the glass with a melange of baked pineapples, caramelized apples, tropical fruit and toasted almonds. After all, it is expertly composed by one of the top winemakers in the world, who’s crafted such notables as Opus One, DuMOL, and Peter Michael to name a few. The style is fresh and lively, with an endless march of tropical fruits, honeyed melon, poached pear, dressed up by an underlying minerality. And we’re not the only ones that loved this terrific Chardonnay… James Suckling scored the wine 93 points, alerting readers that it’s a “serious white for the money…”
Fermented using a combination of 90% Stainless steel tank and 10% oak, a method that preserves the wines vibrant fruit and underlying acidity, and it spent 5 months sur lie, (aging on the fermentation yeast.) The sur lie style aging plays a large role in adding weight and richness to the Chardonnay, which coupled with the vibrant fruit and acidity makes this Chardonnay truly stand-out above the rest.
