Ty Caton planted his vineyard in the Moon Mountain District in 1997, adjacent to other world-class sites like Monte Rosso. He carved out multiple blocks within the vineyard, separated by soil type, elevation, and sun exposure. The steeply contoured hillsides that make his property unique have well-drained red volcanic soils, which produce fresh, focused fruit with outstanding depth.
Ty’s Big Hill is one of the roughest and toughest plots to farm due to its steep grade with up to a 40% incline. These conditions produce wines with supple fruit and polished tannins, unveiling many of Moon Mountain’s most captivating characteristics. His 2020 release is powerful, intense, and focused, revealing great complexity and length that’s hard to match at this price level.
