Founded in 1895, Larkmead is one of the oldest family-owned wineries in Napa Valley, and it’s the geology of what’s beneath their vines that truly makes their Estate vineyards undeniably special. Centuries of alluvial flow have resulted in the accumulation of ancient riverbed gravel, clay, and loam, forming the perfect canvas to cultivate grapes in. Winemaker Dan Petroski ferments grapes from these special vineyards in small lots that are broken up by clonal selection and soil type. He’s then able to identify and blend the absolute best wine possible from each vintage. The results speak for themselves, and their 2016 Napa Valley Cabernet described as a “stellar, powerhouse wine” by Wine Enthusiast earned an incredible 98 Point score and Editors’ Choice.
Their 2016 Napa Valley Cabernet perfectly highlights the diversity of their estate, and arose from the deeper, richer soils found in A and C blocks. The wine was then kept at rest for 19 months in Tonnelleries, Demptos and Ermitage barrels. Checking in this year at 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot, the 2016 perfectly balances powerful fruit with bright acidity and profound complexity. I strongly recommend adding some to your cellar.
