2014 STAGS’ LEAP “THE LEAP” CABERNET SAUVIGNON

If you were to turn the pages of a history book dedicated to Napa Valley’s oldest Wine Estates, the number of wineries that you would find dating back to the 1800’s would be surprisingly small.  Stags’ Leap Winery would certainly make the list with vines planted in 1872, and the first vintage in 1893.  By 1895 they produced 40,000 gallons annually from the area’s rich terroir.  Their flagship wine, The Leap is composed from the best barrels, from their best vineyard blocks.  And at 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2014 is massively structured with micro-layers of espresso roast, inky dark berries, graphite and exotic spice.  Reaping the rewards of 20 months in oak barrels before winemaker Christophe Paubert hand selects the most expressive barrels to create this limited bottling.  At under $100/btl you may want to jump on this right away.

Recognized for it’s unique soils, composed of clay sediments and volcanic deposits, Stags Leap District was Napa Valley’s first AVA.  The area is particularly revered for growing Cabernet Sauvignon and shares a home with notable wineries Shafer, Odette, Regusci and Cliff Lede to name a few.  If you love full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon with plenty of personality, this one is for you.
