Anthem’s proprietors Julie and Justin Arbuckle interviewed over 100 applicants before selecting Jeff Ames as the winemaker responsible for transforming deeply concentrated mountain fruit into a hedonistically rich and powerful wine. Jeff began his winemaking career interning at Penner-Ash in Oregon and later worked as Thomas Rivers Brown’s assistant winemaker for Outpost, Schrader, and TOR before launching his brand Rudius Wines in 2005.

Anthem’s Mt. Veeder property is kept cool, even on hot summer afternoons, moderated by 408 feet of elevation and brisk sea breezes from the nearby San Pablo Bay. These breezes proved helpful in the 2017 vintage, counteracting a slight heatwave in September; however, Anthem’s vineyards remained unaffected and safely harvested on October 2nd, 2017, bearing brilliantly concentrated, intensely focused fruit.

Selected for its powerfully expressive, vividly detailed, and incomparably hedonistic qualities, Anthem’s 2016 Mount Veeder Cabernet is a show-stopper so irresistible that it was nearly impossible to keep stocked in the tasting room. Jeff Ames, the winemaker at TOR and Rudius, crafts Anthem Cabernet to showcase power and restraint while simultaneously exhibiting a stunning level of depth and persistent intensity, setting it apart from others.

Anthem winery is steadfast in creating exceptional quality Cabernets from distinctive Mountain AVA’s in Napa Valley. They’ve assembled a powerful team led by highly-respected viticulturist John Truchard and, as mentioned earlier, winemaker Jeff Ames. The winery’s production team is free to vinify without regard for cost, making every decision solely on its impact on the quality of their wine. All of this is present in their wines, and this 2016 release is their most remarkable yet.

Every decision making Anthem impacts the quality of wine that they produce, and their production team is free to vinify without regard to cost or other extraneous factors. You can taste their relentless drive for creating the highest quality wine possible from their Estate in every glass. The wines are crafted by Jeff Ames, who mentored under Thomas Rivers Brown at Schrader, Maybach, Outpost, and TOR before becoming head winemaker at TOR in 2005. Jeff is also the owner/winemaker at Rudius, which was my #1 wine in 2019.

Mount Veeder arose from an ancient seabed, and it’s the coolest Mountain AVA in Napa, known for producing complex, savory and age-worthy Cabernets. Jeff accentuates those flavors in an elegantly balanced way and doesn’t lose the sense of place.

Anthem’s Cabernet is all about balance, length, and escalating intensity, and the 2015 vintage is stunningly rich with penetrating red fruits laced with savory characteristics. The vines yielded just 1.9 tons per acre of super-concentrated berries, and after 18 months in barrel and three years in the bottle, this wine rocks.

When combining the hedonistic and complex flavors of premium Cabernet Sauvignon from Mount Veeder, with a gifted winemaker that can accentuate and detail those flavors in a way that’s both elegantly balanced, and doesn’t lose it’s sense of place, it’s absolutely stunning to taste.  Anthem was expertly crafted by Jeff Ames, who mentored under Thomas River Brown at Schrader, Maybach, Outpost and TOR before becoming head winemaker at TOR in 2005.  Jeff also owns Rudius wines, and he produced our #1 wine of the year for 2019… his talent absolutely knows no bounds.  The Anthem Cabernet is all about balance, length and escalating intensity.  The wine is stacked with individualistic, complex and savory flavors that are characteristic of Mount Veeder terroir.

Born from an Estate Vineyard on Mount Veeder where the majestic vines yield less than 3 tons per acre of small, powerful berries with intense flavors.  The final blend incorporates 4 of the top 5 Bordeaux Varietals and was cut from famous clones including Cult clones 337 and 7.  Mt Veeder is the coolest Mountain in Napa, which allows the grapes to have a longer hang-time so they can develop into something truly special. If you would like to taste a perfect example of a stunningly balanced Mount Veeder Cabernet, this is your opportunity.

Turley is an American Icon that’s been a benchmark producer of Old Vine Zinfandel for nearly three decades. Their first vintage of 1993 Hayne Zinfandel ranked #11 on the Wine Spectator Top 100 list, and they’ve remained a paragon in their field ever since. They now produce an eye-popping forty-seven separate wines from over fifty Certified Organic Vineyards, and they specialize in ancient vines. Their Old Vines Zinfandel beautifully displays their undeviating winemaking philosophy that’s an anthem of their brand.

The 2017 Old Vines Zinfandel was carefully stitched together from a vast collection of ancient vineyards spanning across seven iconic regions across California and created from vines ranging from 41 to 129 years old, the 2017 showcases old vine depth, and with no shortage of personality.

The winery has always attracted some of California’s most talented winemakers, beginning with Helen Turley. Helen passed the torch to winemaker Ehren Jordan, and now Ehren to Tegan Passalacqua, who worked under Jordan before becoming Director of Winemaking.

We’ve all heard the saying, surround yourself with talented people and great things will follow.  This should be the anthem of Altos Las Hormigas, a partnership between renowned Tuscan winemakers Alberto Antonini and Attilio Pagli, as well as young entrepreneur Antonio Morescalchi.  Experimenting with the unique, limestone soils in the Uco Valley district, an area that has likely produced more 95 – 100 Point wines than any other region of Argentina.  There, the combination of mineral character and chalky sensations take this value Malbec to the next level.  Earning a terrific 93 Point score from Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate, you won’t want to hesitate too long to secure a case.

Saturating your palate in a soft, velvety texture, finely threaded with exotic spices, roasted espresso, minerals and ripened black fruits, the 2014 Altos Las Hormigas Reserve Malbec stands tall among most Malbecs that we taste in the under fifty range.  Developing for 18 months in oak, this beautiful interpretation of Uco Valley Malbec shouldn’t be missed…
