2019 MY FAVORITE NEIGHBOR SAN LUIS OBISPO CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Turning heads with consecutive vintages earning mid 90 point scores, Eric Jensen of My Favorite Neighbor created an ideal combination of perfectly ripe fruit, flavor intensity, and lavish textures, giving some of the best $50 Cabernets anywhere a run for their money. As a homage, he created this Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend from exceptional vineyards around Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo, and Edna Valley, crafted to deliver unreal quality and shake up domestic Cab in this price range.

Eric is dedicated to growing fruit for some of the best wineries in Paso Robles, gaining experience along the way from neighboring farmers and vintners, particularly from his original favorite neighbor, Stephan Asseo of L’Aventure Winery. Farming is life for him, and the farmers he works with all share the common goal of growing the best fruit possible using organic or biodynamic practices, coaxing the vines to perform at their ultimate best. The results are simply stunning, and with the new 95 point score, don’t hesitate to secure yours.

2019 MY FAVORITE NEIGHBOR HARVEY & HARRIET SAN LUIS OBISPO PROPRIETARY RED

Luxuriously designed to emulate high-end Cabernet Blends’ most hedonistic qualities, Harvey & Harriett creator Eric Jensen’s inspiration for this wine came from his hardworking parents, Harvey and Harriet, who couldn’t afford the expensive, top-level Cabernet blends produced today. Eric struck gold, finding an ideal balance of opulence, intensity, and richness, making it a clear choice as our number four pick this year.

Dedicated to growing fruit for some of the best wineries in Paso Robles, Eric Jensen of Booker Vineyard gained winemaking experience along the way from neighbors Stephan Asseo of L’Aventure, and friend Justin Smith of Saxum. The fruit for Harvey & Harriet is sourced from premier sites, blended to showcase the depth, power, and character expected from cult-style wines.

2018 MY FAVORITE NEIGHBOR HARVEY & HARRIET PASO ROBLES PROPRIETARY RED

Designed for wine lovers seeking elegant, collector-worthy wines that are accessibly priced, Eric Jensen created Harvey & Harriet as a homage to his parents, who could never afford most of the top-level Cabernet blends today. He diligently creates this wine from premier sites in Paso Robles, blending it to showcase the depth, intensity, charisma, and character expected from much higher-end wines. With mid-90s scores, this is, as Jeb Dunnuck writes, a “polished, elegant beauty,” and at $32, you can’t go wrong with a case.

Gaining experience from neighbors Stephan Asseo of L’Aventure, and friend Justin Smith of Saxum, Eric Jensen’s wines make a powerful statement of quality, value and do so without pretension.

Eric thoughtfully crafts Harvey and Harriet in a rich, showy style by blending 40% Cabernet Sauvignon with Syrah, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. This unique blend walks a tightrope of elegance and intensity, delivering a high level of enjoyment at a realistic price.

2018 MY FAVORITE NEIGHBOR PASO ROBLES CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Created in a collaborative spirit that calls on the best, sustainably farmed fruit from a collection of neighboring vineyards, Eric Jensen of My Favorite Neighbor believes it takes a village to make great wine. His circle includes favorite neighbor Stephan Asseo of L’Aventure, and friend Justin Smith of Saxum, whom Eric spent five vintages with, gleaning top-level winemaking. This wine gives Paso Robles an unmistakable voice, powerful enough to be heard in Napa.  A $50, 96 Point Cabernet from anywhere is a dominating force.

Guided by inspiration, Eric interferes as little as possible during the winemaking process, resulting in elegantly balanced wines with a salient sense of place. Modeling consistency, this wine’s cumulative average rating from Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate over the past six consecutive vintages is an astounding 96 Points.

Impeccably farmed, Eric’s 100-acre certified organic estate vineyard on Paso’s Westside produces noble quality fruit. The 2018 blend includes 77% Cabernet Sauvignon accented with Bordeaux and Rhone varieties, aged 18 months in oak.

2016 BOOKER “MY FAVORITE NEIGHBOR” PROPRIETARY RED

When you surround yourself with the absolute best producers in Paso Robles, your odds at creating a successful wine brand increase exponentially.  Just look at Eric Jensen of Booker, who’s favorite neighbors include Stephan Asseo of L’Aventure Wines, one of Paso’s most elite growers and winemakers.  Eric also worked with Justin Smith of SAXUM for five years, building the skills necessary to be a top player in Paso Robles.  Combine that with Jensen’s incredible farming skills, where his entire vineyard is farmed biodynamically, and he has everything it takes to be one of the greats.  Stacking up high 90’s scores like their going out of style, Booker produces wines that rank among the best not only in Paso Robles but in all of California.  They’re not easy to come by and with the 95-97 point score, I wouldn’t wait…

The blend on the 2016 is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, enhanced with Syrah and Petite Verdot.  On the palate the wine is deeply seductive, balanced and long.  Each case has four unique labels, which adds to the excitement this wine puts forth.  If you’re interested in experiencing one of the best examples from Paso Robles, don’t miss the 2016 My Favorite Neighbor.  This wine will change minds, and make you an instant fan of this growing wine region, if you’re not already there.

2017 WILLIAMS SELYEM “EASTSIDE ROAD NEIGHBORS” PINOT NOIR

Have you ever wondered what goes into California’s most iconic Pinot Noir? It all starts in the fields with ridiculously high-quality grapes sourced from some of California’s best vineyards, but it’s what happens next that makes them a model of quality and consistency every vintage.  The winery follows a strict minimal interference approach to their winemaking with absolutely no pumping, no filtering or any other process that can potentially unsettle or compromise quality.  From there, it’s about the smallest details, like the old-world method of foot treading the grapes (in clean waders) that leads to the naturally regal quality that you can taste in their wines.  The winery excelled in 2017 with exceptional levels of seductive fruits, supreme complexity and stunning balance.  Their Eastside Road Neighbors is one of my all time favorites, and at under $100, the level of quality leaves me at a loss for words…

Forged from iconic vineyards, the 2017 offers an equilibrium of intense red fruits, fine details and stunning balance.  The winery made history when Wine Enthusiast awarded their Litton Estate Pinot a perfect 100 Point score, which was the first Pinot in North America to earn 100 points from any major wine publication. If you want to experience a prime example of domestically produced Pinot Noir, here’s a terrific opportunity.

2018 DOMAINE GUY ROBIN CHABLIS VIEILLES VIGNES

Vieilles Vignes means old vines, and Guy Robin is one of my favorite producers of old vine Chablis. He began collecting old Chablis parcels back in the 60s, and few other Chablis estates have such a rich collection of older vines. As a result, few wineries can deliver Chablis wines of such character and complexity. At $36, his Chablis VV offers dynamic complexity, laser focus, and optimum balance.

Guy’s daughter Marie-Ange leads the Estate and shares her father’s passion for old vines. She creates their Vieilles Vignes Chablis from vines averaging four decades in age, and many of the neighboring plots are premier cru sites, sharing similar soils and climate.

Guy Robin hand-harvests their Chardonnay grapes at the pinnacle of ripeness. He immediately presses them at the winery, where they’re held in a tank for 24 hours to settle naturally. The winery ferments in temperature-controlled, stainless steel tanks, and they also age in tanks to preserve the fruit’s most natural expression.
